My Own Experience
Within the past week or so, I got a waitressing job at the Heritage House restaurant. That same day, I posted about it on Facebook. I had not yet called to tell my parents about it, but the next day I received a phone call from them congratulating me on getting the job. It turns out, my aunt (who has a Facebook) spoke to my mother (who does not have a Facebook) on the phone and told her about the job before I had the chance to. This experience simply shows how quickly information on social networks spreads. While I had wanted to be the first to tell my parents about the job, by posting about it on Facebook, I should have known better than to expect them not to find out. This experience obviously had no negative consequences, but it made me think about all the posts I see from others that could have negative consequences. If my little piece of information was spread that fast, I cannot imagine the gossip surrounding certain posts by others. All in all, it is important to be careful about posting anything on the Internet, because as soon as it is sent, more people probably know about it than you think.

ReplyDeleteCongratulations on obtaining a job! I am actually quite surprised you even know where the Heritage House is, since it is far enough away that most students have never even heard of it. I applaud your willingness to explore the surrounding area. As a local, I of course know where it is... in fact my great-uncle used to own the restaurant, and he is who built the model town and train station that can be found in the one room. My family used to go there quite often when it was still owned by the family. I might have to stop by to see how the food and building have changed!
ReplyDeleteOn to the real topic of this post, yes, it is really amazing how fast information can travel via the internet. Fortunately, Facebook has good privacy controls that can be quite effective if used correctly, but many people don't know how to use them or simply forget. Facebook and social media sites were once praised mainly for their ability to transfer information long distances quickly. I wonder if in the near future users will shift towards demanding more fine-grained control over such information spread.
Congratulations! It is pretty amazing (and at times frightening or funny) on how fast information spreads. I've had the same happen with my family as my mother calls and will tell me information shes seen on facebook well before I ever logged on that day. It's a double edged sword because I love that my mother is on facebook and we have this open communication in another form, but man does word travel fast.
